Norilsk State Industrial Institute is the most northern higher education establishment in Russia. It was established in 1961 as Norilsk Evening Industrial Institute. In 1987 it was reorganized to Plant-Technical college of Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Complex in the name of A.P. Zavenyagin and in 1991 to Norilsk State Industrial Institute.
In 2002 the institute was included in the Unified State Register of Juridical Persons as a state educational establishment of higher professional education «Norilsk State Industrial Institute».
By the order of Ministry of education and sciencein 2011 the institute was renamed into a federal state budgetary educational establishment of higher professional education «Norilsk State Industrial Institute».
The institute has 2 faculties: the faculty of mining and technology and the faculty of power engineering, economics and management. They consist of 14 departments and 9 of them are graduating. The institute also has Polytechnic College, Center of qualifications improvement and professional retraining, Informational technology center, Scientific-research department, Publishing department, and Pre-college education center.
The institute offers more than 35 programs of study in technical and economic fields and trains both bachelors and specialists. Approximately 400 faculty members and employees work at the institute. Since the moment of its establishment NII has graduated more than 15 000 students.
Besides, 39 educational and 1 research laboratories operate at the institute. The library of NII not only abounds in scientific, technological and general literature, but also gives students an opportunity to try their hands at «Dialog» literary society.
Norilsk Industrial Institute collaborates with both Polar and Finnish branches of CJSC MMC «Norilsk Nickel», Harjavalta, where the best students undergo their practical training.
